Geography

Why is Geography so important?

  • Geography has the ability to widen horizons, and to allow children to experience beyond their boundaries.
  • Gaining knowledge and understanding of other places in the world can only increase children’s knowledge of other cultures, fostering a respect and understanding of what it means to be a positive citizen in a multi-cultural country.
  • Geography teaching also motivates children to find out about the physical world, and enables them to recognise the importance of sustainable development for the future of mankind.

What we teach

  • The National Curriculum for Geography for EYFS, KS1 and KS2.
  • Make cross-curricular links enabling the embedding of geographical thinking and enquiry.

Through their work in geography, children learn about their local area, and they compare their life in this area with that in other regions in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. They learn how to draw and interpret maps, and they develop the skills of research, investigation, analysis and problem-solving.

We follow the National Curriculum and make cross-curricular links wherever possible. There will always be a double Geography unit taught per year ensuring that the National Curriculum is covered across the age range, with Geographical skills at the heart of each unit. Current units of work across KS1 and KS2 can be found on the school’s Long Term cross-curricular plans. These are then used to produce Medium Term and Weekly plans, uploaded and stored on Learn Anywhere. Geography in the Foundation Stage is based on Early Learning Goals, primarily Knowledge and Understanding of the World.

The children’s knowledge, interest and understanding in Geography is furthered through the wider reading and the focussed writing they engage in thanks to Grimes Dyke’s commitment to cross curricular learning.

How we teach

All teachers are responsible for monitoring and evaluating their curriculum provision, ensuring that high teaching and learning standards are met, in line with the National Curriculum. Where teachers are not confident with Geography content, they can use online resources, colleagues, and CPD to assist them. Teachers are encouraged to plan for learning through investigative, enquiry led fieldwork as well as ensuring the locational knowledge is taught. Where possible, specialist visitors or visits are arranged to provide subject enrichment.
