Religious Education (R.E.)

Ethos

To inspire our pupils to learn from others and discover the value of empathy and to help our pupils to celebrate common humanity, rather than being lured into a cul-de-sac of hatred, anger and division.

Pupils and students should:

  • Investigate the beliefs and practices of religions and other world views;
  • Investigate how religions and other world views address questions of meaning, purpose & value;
  •  Investigate how religions and other world views influence morality, identity and diversity.

What we teach

  • The Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education in Calderdale, Kirklees and Leeds: Believing and Belonging
  • We teach the units from The Supporting material for the Agreed Syllabus for Religion and Worldviews in Kirklees, Leeds and Calderdale. A complete scheme of work written by SACRE to fulfil the requirements of the syllabus.
  • Making cross-curricular links to PHSE, Literacy and the Humanities.

 We follow the Agreed Syllabus and make cross-curricular links wherever possible. There will be one Whole School RE Day per half term. There is a RE theme for the Year and each RE day will link to the over-arching theme. Where necessary, teachers are encouraged to finish units after the RE day, ensuring that the requirements of the syllabus and the statutory 6 hours of RE teaching per half term is covered across the age range. Current units of work across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 can be found on the school’s Long-Term cross-curricular plans.

RE in the Foundation Stage is based on Early Learning Goals, primarily Understanding the World and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. RE can also contribute to children’s development of Characteristics of Effective Learning with regard to:

  • Making links and noticing patterns in their experience (Creating and Thinking Critically - Making links)
  • Showing curiosity about objects, events and people (Playing and Exploring – Finding out and exploring)
  • Using senses to explore the world around them (Playing and Exploring – Finding out and exploring)
  • Representing their experiences in play (Playing and Exploring – Playing with what they know)
  • Acting out experiences with other people (Playing and Exploring – Playing with what they know)

How we teach

All teachers are responsible for monitoring and evaluating their curriculum provision, ensuring that high teaching and learning standards are met, in line with the Agreed Syllabus. Where teachers are not confident with RE content, the units of work provide comprehensive background information and links to resources, both print and online.  Teachers are encouraged to start each lesson with a question, and where appropriate, children must lead the discussion Where possible, specialist visitors or visits are arranged to provide subject enrichment.
